Metropolis Online

Metropolis online journal is a joint project of Metropolis Association, Kolo Publishers and Art Watch UK. The unique architectural fabric of St Petersburg was developed according to the most sophisticated principles of urban planning. The city’s well-preserved 18th and 19th century architecture offers a unique opportunity for research and emulation worldwide. Ignoring St Petersburg’s unique character, developers attack the historic centre with insensitive structures, which may forever deprive the city of its integrity. Our journal is set up to fight these destructive invasions and promote classical vision for the city as a whole.

Metropolis is an official Supporter of the International Network for Traditional Architecture and Urbanism. Patron: HRH The Prince of Wales.

The Living City Report 2007

According to UNESCO wording, St. Petersburg is an “absolute and only of a kind embodiment of the European idea of a regular and landscape harmonized city which has been under construction for 200 years on a vast land”.

It is now however, that this originality can be lost once and for all. The unprecedented construction boom the city now experiences does not reckon neither the Petersburg landscape, nor its town-planning traditions.

EUROPA NOSTRA appeals to PRESIDENT PUTIN:

Stop Gazprom from Devastating the World Heritage Skyline of St. Petersburg!

The Hague, 10 December 2007. Europa Nostra - the Pan-European Federation for Cultural Heritage representing 250 heritage organisations throughout Europe - has just launched an urgent appeal to President Vladimir Putin, calling on him to intervene for the safeguarding of the historic core of St. Petersburg. If no urgent action is undertaken, this unique city – and particularly its delicate silhouette – will be forever ruined by the construction of 396 metre high skyscraper for the new headquarters of Gazprom, Russia’s energy monopoly. Europa Nostra is profoundly distressed at the planned construction of Gazprom City in this unique location and joins the international heritage community and the outraged public in Russia in its widespread opposition to the project which, if constructed, will have a severely detrimental impact on this outstanding historic urban landscape.
